On April 13, the Arizona Rural Development Council and the Cochise County Farm Bureau partnered to host the Southeast Arizona Rural Connection in Willcox, AZ. Forty-eight attendees from around the region participated in a series of work sessions to learn about the impact of supporting local businesses, a successful community development pilot project, attracting youth into the field of health services, community development financing and successful community building projects from around the US, as well as hearing about funding opportunities for production agriculture in the afternoon sessions.

Applications are being sought from rural communities and entities across Arizona who wish to participate in a federal pilot program in regional economic development. Under a cooperative agreement between the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development agency and four Regional Rural Development Centers, multi-entity regions will compete to participate in technical assistance and training to develop a regional economic development strategy.
Arizona is one of the eight states across the nation selected for the pilot program. Four applications from the western region will be selected to be sent to the national team. From there the top two from each of the eight pilot states will be awarded. Each selected area will receive training on regional development and be given background data and analysis specific to the region. The training will involve active participation by the trainees and span a multi-week period. The Arizona Rural Development Council will hold the 4th Annual Rural Policy Forum July 22-23, 2010 at Northern Arizona University. The topic for this year’s event is “Job Creation” as it relates to renewable energy and other light industry. The Rural Policy Institute has been contracted to provide a background report to highlight existing projects and best practices.
